History of Cleveland, TX.Cleveland was founded in 1878, when Charles Lander Cleveland, a local judge, deeded 63.6 acres of land to the Houston East and West Texas Railway.
Soon the echoes of saws and steam engines filled the forests around Cleveland. The East Texas lumber industry flourished through the end of the nineteenth century and through the beginning of the twentieth century, putting Cleveland on the map. Most of the sawmills are gone, yet Cleveland remains a vital shipping point for sand, gravel, and lumber products. Since entering into the twenty-first, Cleveland has become a key area to the Houston metroplex with a small town atmosphere. A culturally diverse town, Cleveland has an intriguing past and remains the gateway to fun in the great outdoors. |
